“Proverbs, Adages, and Maxims” at Hebrew Union College’s Heller Museum illuminates how every culture has distilled wisdom into sayings that reflect shared truths and human experience.
I painted “An Evil Man (Scoundrel)”, oil on canvas, upon receiving an invitation to participate in the "Proverbs" exhibition. I read the entire Book of Proverbs and created a shortlist of verses that spoke to me in my current time and place. I decided upon Proverbs 6:12-15, which addresses the fate of "a scoundrel" and is one of the most compelling and relevant messages for this moment. The work is a warning against propaganda, conflict and authoritarianism.
It shares my sadness over the tone of blame and victimization that seems so prevalent in our time, but we must remember to always stand firm in our spiritual consciousness.
